The study of mathematics as a teaching subject

The study of mathematics as a teaching subject requires a combination with a second teaching subject, as is the case with other teaching subjects. It is offered and carried out in cooperation with our partners in the Verbund Nord-Ost. You can find all general information about the study of teaching in the Verbund on the website of the Verbund Nord-Ost and on the page of the Teacher Education Program. Below you will find an excerpt about the study goals and professional fields that our curriculum defines for graduates of the teaching education program with mathematics as a teaching subject.

Study goals and professional fields

The goal of the bachelor's program in mathematics at the University of Vienna is to provide students with a university-level education in mathematics, subject didactics, educational science, and school practice, with a focus on teaching at secondary-school levels 1 and 2. Students receive a basic introduction to mathematics as a science. Thematically, the focus is on those areas that play a central role in the school curriculum at the secondary level. Mathematics as a special technology of thought and part of human culture will be introduced to the students in this context.

The students come to know the important relationships between mathematical knowledge and aspects of school-subject matter in secondary education, so that they may use these profitably in teaching (school mathematics, own courses as a bridge between subject mathematics and subject didactics).

The students will become familiar with basic concepts from didactics of the science of mathematics and well-versed in methodologies of concrete lesson planning and implementation (e.g. in the use of computers in mathematics lessons).

Graduates from the University of Vienna's Bachelor's program in education with mathematics as a subject will be able to provide their students with a basic understanding of mathematics that will enable them to form opinions and make decisions in mathematical situations. Moreover, they will receive a sound preparation for independent lesson planning and implementation at the secondary-school level, having the readiness for in-service training.
